What is a conversion rate?

Conversion rate is the percentage you get by dividing completed conversions by clicks. It measures the distance between an ad earning attention and that attention producing a result.

You decide what counts as a conversion: a purchase, a form submission, a call or a signup. Change the definition and the rate changes with it, so keeping it fixed is essential.

How it is calculated

Conversion Rate = (Conversions ÷ Clicks) × 100

Enter conversions and clicks for the same period and the same campaign. The tool expresses the ratio as a percentage.

Using sessions or impressions instead of clicks produces a different measurement entirely. Mixing the two denominators can make flat performance look like improvement or decline.

How to read the result

Conversion rate reflects two things at once: the intent of the traffic arriving and the ability of the page it lands on to serve that intent. When the rate drops, separating which one moved is the first step to fixing it.

A high rate is not automatically good news; a campaign reaching a very narrow audience can post a high rate at low volume. That is why the rate should be read alongside total conversions.

Frequently asked questions

Should the denominator be clicks or sessions?

For ad performance, clicks are more direct because they reflect the visits the ad produced. Sessions suit site wide analysis, as long as the same denominator is used across every period you compare.

If my conversion rate dropped, is the ad or the page at fault?

If click volume rose while the rate fell, the campaign likely reached a broader, less qualified audience. If volume held steady and the rate still fell, look at the page experience, pricing or stock instead.

Can I combine different conversion types into one rate?

Technically yes, but the result becomes hard to interpret. A purchase and a newsletter signup do not carry the same value, so measuring them separately is far more useful.
